When Henrietta Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope or express an original idea. Instead, she joins a group of women “computers,” charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who calculates projects in “girl hours” and has no time for the women’s probing theories. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. The dedication of Henrietta Leavitt and her female peers changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth.

How to Watch:
2. Click “Rent Video (48 Hours)” under Video on Demand.
3. Select the $0-Priced ‘Pay What You Want’ Ticket. You only need to “purchase” 1 ticket per household.
4. When it is collecting Payment Information, look for the area that says “Would you like to make a donation?”. This is where you enter the amount you would like to pay for your Pay What You Want ticket.
5. After you have finished your order, you download the tickets that will give you access to the stream. An email with a link to your tickets will also be sent. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDER IF NO EMAIL CAN BE LOCATED.
6. Starting on PAGE 2 of the ticket packet, you will find your stream instructions as well as ACCESS CODE. The instructions read as follows:

A discussion about
Silent Sky will take place at 2pm MST on Sunday October 11th on
Facebook Live. The discussion will be led by Dr. Kayla Pritchard of SDSM&T. Dr. Pritchard has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Nebraska and has been teaching at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology since 2013. Dr.Pritchard focuses on examining people in context and has published and presented papers on topics ranging from gendered communication to the impact of motherhood on identity. The focus of the discussion will be the idea of “womanhood” and the different ways it is presented in the play.
